Briefing by Joyce Msuya, Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator, on the humanitarian situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
---
The crisis in eastern DRC is at a dangerous point: The situation is deteriorating rapidly, and if hostilities spill into Goma – a densely populated urban center – the impact on civilians could be devastating.
More than 21 million people already need aid across the country – one of the highest numbers worldwide. Approximately 1 million people had already sought refuge in neighboring countries. The escalation in the east threatens to make a critical humanitarian situation even worse.
---
Council members, to address this escalating humanitarian crisis before the situation worsens further, I have three asks to the Council:
First, I urge this Council and all Member States to leverage their influence to ensure that international humanitarian law is respected by all parties.
Civilians must be protected. IDP sites and medical facilities must be protected. Rapid, unimpeded, and safe humanitarian access to those in need must be facilitated.
Second, since we are at the start of the year and many funding sources remain unavailable or delayed for various reasons, adequate funding is essential to enable and sustain urgent humanitarian action. In light of the scale and severity of the current situation, we are allocating US $ 17 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund for immediate life-saving interventions. However, let’s be clear: Additional resources are urgently
needed.
Third, I urge the Council and all Member States to use their influence to end the hostilities.
The scale of suffering in the DRC demands urgent attention. The plight of the country’s women, men and children cannot continue to go unnoticed.

BBC News Video: Trump’s call for Palestinians to leave Gaza condemned as ethnic cleansing | BBC News
President Trump’s call to “clean out” Gaza with Palestinians moving to countries such as Egypt and Jordan has been condemned as a plan for ethnic cleansing. Mr Trump called Gaza a “demolition site” and said people there should move “either temporarily or long term”.
He said: You’re talking about probably a million and a half people, and we just clean out that whole thing". He suggested that houses could be built “at a different location where they can maybe live in peace for a change”.
The President said he had made the request to Jordan's King Abdullah and Egypt's president. Both countries have rejected the idea of taking Palestinian refugees from Gaza. Hamas and the Palestinian Authority also condemned the proposal. Lawyers and human rights advocates described it as ethnic cleansing. However the proposal has been welcomed by far-right Israeli nationalists.
Mr Trump’s comments come as a fragile ceasefire is continuing in Gaza. However there is renewed tension over Israel’s refusal to allow thousands of Palestinians to return to the north of the territory.

BBC News Video: President Trump calls on Egypt and Jordan to take in Palestinians from Gaza | BBC News
US President Donald Trump said he wants Egypt and Jordan to take in Palestinians from Gaza, which he described as a “demolition site”.
In a phone call this weekend, President Trump said he had told Jordan's King Abdullah: "I'd love you to take on more, because I'm looking at the whole Gaza Strip right now and it's a mess, it's a real mess."
Most of Gaza's two million residents have been displaced in the 15 months of war, which has flattened much of Gaza's infrastructure.
Hamas has vowed to oppose any such action, and the comments will likely outrage Palestinians in Gaza.
Some on Israel’s far-right want to return to Gaza, and have welcomed President Trump’s comments.

International Video: As California burns, Trump torches US climate agenda
Washington has weather worries of its own.
(Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Officials are hoping that rain forecast for this weekend could douse the wildfires that have ravaged California in recent weeks, and have been reignited in the hills behind LA - though there are fears that the water could now bring mudslides instead.
The new President is flying there to see the damage for himself - but is likely to be met by scepticism and concern by Californians, after he suggested he could cut off disaster relief and cancelled a swathe of Biden administration climate policies.

International Video: Could Trump’s executive orders totally change America?
Hours after Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States of America, he signed executive orders to take the US out of the World Health Organisation and the Paris Climate Accords - then around 1,500 January 6 rioters were freed; a national emergency at the US-Mexico border was declared, he made the designation of two genders an official government position and the TikTok ban was paused - and that’s before he made off-hand comments on whether the fragile ceasefire in Gaza will last.
