United Nations Video: International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust - UN Chief message
Video message by António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, on the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust.
"This year marks the eightieth anniversary of the Holocaust’s end.
We mourn the six million Jews murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators, as they sought to destroy an entire people.
We grieve the Roma and Sinti, the people with disabilities, and all others enslaved, persecuted, tortured, and killed.
We stand alongside victims, survivors and their families.
And we renew our resolve never to forget.
To allow the Holocaust to fade from memory would dishonour the past and betray the future.
Remembrance is a moral act. And a call to action.
To know the history of the Holocaust is to know the depths to which humanity can sink…
To understand how the Nazis were able to commit their heinous crimes, with the complicity of others…
And to comprehend that each of us has a solemn duty – to speak-up against hate, and to stand-up for the human rights of all.
Following the hell of the Holocaust, countries came together. And they enshrined the dignity of every person in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
In dark times, that document remains a shining light.
Eighty years since the Holocaust’s end, antisemitism is still with us – fuelled by the same lies and loathing that made the Nazi genocide possible.
And it is rising.
Discrimination is rife...
Hate is being whipped-up the world over…
Indisputable historical facts are being distorted, diminished, and denied…
And efforts are being made to recast and rehabilitate Nazis and their collaborators.
We must stand up to these outrages.
In these days of division – and more than a year since the appalling 7th October terror attacks by Hamas – we must hold fast to our common humanity.
We must condemn antisemitism – just as we must condemn all forms of racism, prejudice and religious bigotry.
And we must renew our resolve to defend the dignity and human rights of all.
Those causes go to the very core of the United Nations.
We will never forget – and we will never waver in that fight".

United Nations Video: DRC: "Scale of suffering demands urgent attention" - OCHA | United Nations
Briefing by Joyce Msuya, Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator, on the humanitarian situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
---
The crisis in eastern DRC is at a dangerous point: The situation is deteriorating rapidly, and if hostilities spill into Goma – a densely populated urban center – the impact on civilians could be devastating.
More than 21 million people already need aid across the country – one of the highest numbers worldwide. Approximately 1 million people had already sought refuge in neighboring countries. The escalation in the east threatens to make a critical humanitarian situation even worse.
---
Council members, to address this escalating humanitarian crisis before the situation worsens further, I have three asks to the Council:
First, I urge this Council and all Member States to leverage their influence to ensure that international humanitarian law is respected by all parties.
Civilians must be protected. IDP sites and medical facilities must be protected. Rapid, unimpeded, and safe humanitarian access to those in need must be facilitated.
Second, since we are at the start of the year and many funding sources remain unavailable or delayed for various reasons, adequate funding is essential to enable and sustain urgent humanitarian action. In light of the scale and severity of the current situation, we are allocating US $ 17 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund for immediate life-saving interventions. However, let’s be clear: Additional resources are urgently
needed.
Third, I urge the Council and all Member States to use their influence to end the hostilities.
The scale of suffering in the DRC demands urgent attention. The plight of the country’s women, men and children cannot continue to go unnoticed.

Rebels from the Congolese M23 movement say they have entered the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo city of Goma and taken control.
Sitting on the border with Rwanda and the shores of Lake Kivu, Goma is a vital trading and transport hub, home to more than a million people and within reach of mining towns supplying metals and minerals in high demand such as gold, tin and coltan.
The rebels say they now control the city, but the Congolese government says its troops still hold some key locations.
Heavy artillery and gunfire has been heard in the city throughout the day.
The M23 are led by ethnic Tutsis, who say they needed to take up arms to protect the rights of the minority group.

BBC News Video: Should lynx be re-introduced to Britain in future? | BBC News
Four lynx were captured in the Scottish Highlands earlier in January after being illegally released into the wild.
Some have described their release as reckless and irresponsible, but there are a growing number of so-called “guerilla rewilders” who believe rare and even extinct species should be reintroduced to the country - regardless of what the government rules say.
BBC Climate Editor Justin Rowlatt went to Devon to meet Derek Gow, who breeds British indigenous animals with a view to releasing them, to discuss rewilding the animal.
Farming communities have voiced concern about the potential impact on livestock.

Ceremonies are taking place to mark 80 years since the liberation of the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Some 1.1 million people, most of them Jews, were murdered at the Auschwitz complex, making it the site of the largest mass execution of human beings ever recorded.
About 50 survivors have returned to the site to lay wreaths and candles, and some will later give speeches at a service.
World leaders and King Charles are on their way to the event - but organisers want the dwindling number of survivors to be at the centre of the commemorations.
Polish President Andrzej Duda says his country's job is to preserve the memory of Auschwitz "in order to never let it happen again".

ODN Video: Rebels Claim Control of Goma: Thousands Flee DR Congo as Clashes Escalate
Rebels from the M23 group, allegedly backed by Rwanda, have announced their capture of Goma, the largest city in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Footage from Sunday night showed flashes lighting up the dark sky and the sound of gunfire.
By early Monday morning, dozens of rebels in military uniforms were seen marching into the city.
At least 13 foreign peacekeepers have reportedly lost their lives during clashes with the rebel group.
The M23 rebels declared their takeover of Goma in a statement just before the expiration of a 48-hour deadline they had given to the Congolese army to surrender.
Some soldiers fled to the border town of Rubavu in Rwanda on Monday, where they were processed by Rwandese border officials and gave up their weapons.

ODN Video: Footage Shows Thousands of Palestinians Returning to Destroyed Homes in Northern Gaza
These are the scenes as tens of thousands of Palestinians make their way to the most heavily destroyed part of the Gaza Strip on Monday morning, as Israel and Hamas agreed for another group of hostages to be released on Thursday.
Israel officially lifted its closure of the north for the first time since the early weeks of the 15 month war with Hamas.
The return of Palestinians was delayed as Israel refused to open checkpoints, due to alleged breaches of the ceasefire agreement. However the dispute was resolved overnight.
Huge crowds of people were seen carrying their belongings on foot along a main highway running next to the coast.

Officials are hoping that rain forecast for this weekend could douse the wildfires that have ravaged California in recent weeks, and have been reignited in the hills behind LA - though there are fears that the water could now bring mudslides instead.
The new President is flying there to see the damage for himself - but is likely to be met by scepticism and concern by Californians, after he suggested he could cut off disaster relief and cancelled a swathe of Biden administration climate policies.

International Video: Ukraine war: can Trump really make a deal with Putin?
In Donald Trump’s speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos he said, again, that he wants a peace deal with Vladimir Putin over the war in Ukraine, again suggested Canada could become part of America and again raised the spectre of tariffs that economists say could devastate the global economy, so what is the new American president’s vision of the world order and how will he deal with China and Xi Jinping’s claims over Taiwan?

In his inaugural address President Trump said America would expand its territory, what does this actually mean? A future land grab? Or just a more aggressive American influence in parts of the world? And what does it mean for some of worlds’ other strongmen, who have their own expansionist ambitions?
