Armed Syrian rebels are making rapid advances across the country, in the biggest challenge to President Assad in years. They began by advancing from the town of Idlib into Aleppo province and have now taken over most of Aleppo city. The city had been under full state control since government forces backed by Russia and Iran pushed the rebel groups out in 2016. In the last few days President Assad was believed to be in Moscow for talks with Vladimir Putin.
