United Nations Video: Haiti: UN Reduces Presence in Port-au-Prince Amid Surge in Armed Gang Violence and Displacement
Virtual press conference from Port-au-Prince by Ulrika Richardson, United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator on the situation in Haiti.
--------------
Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Haiti Ulrika Richardson today (20 Nov) said the United Nations is “starting to reduce slightly” its footprint in the capital, Port-au-Prince as there has been “an increase in terms of killings and lynching on part of the armed gangs” over the past few days.
Briefing reporters in New York remotely from Haiti, Richardson said armed gangs have been “gaining actually territory within the capital.”
Over the past few days, Richardson said, “thousands of people have had to again leave their homes and, of course, seek shelter,” and added that “this puts a lot of pressure on the already very, very, let's say, strained capacities in terms of providing protection, but also food, shelter and, of course, water to displaced people.”
The Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator said the United Nations country Team has had “thousands of meals provided a day,” as well as health care, psychosocial care, and clean water.
She said, “the support has been extremely intense during very, very difficult operations.”
Richardson explained that a humanitarian helicopter which had been disabled is now back in service and has been used “to relocate many of our international staff to the departments so that we can continue the important work not only on humanitarian assistance, but also on the development work that we are continuing throughout the country.”

BBC News Video: Mohamed Al Fayed abuse ‘could be on scale of Savile’, survivors advocate says | BBC News
The scale of Mohamed Al Fayed’s sexual abuse could be similar to that of Jimmy Savile’s, Harrods’ newly appointed survivors’ advocate has told the BBC.
There has been a torrent of allegations against the late billionaire businessman since a BBC documentary in September broadcast the claims of 20 women.
Speaking about her appointment earlier this month, Dame Jasvinder Sanghera said she had been contacted by a former pupil from a school for deaf children.
Al Fayed “had access to vulnerable young women from that school”, she said, adding that testimony she had heard suggested that his “tentacles went far and wide”.
The school told the BBC that as far as it was aware Al Fayed did not have access to the school, and that it takes safeguarding very seriously.

BBC News Video: Germany suspects sabotage behind severed undersea cables | BBC News
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said damage to two undersea cables in the Baltic Sea looks like an act of sabotage.
A 1,170km (730-mile) telecommunications cable between Finland and Germany was severed in the early hours of Monday, while a 218km internet link between Lithuania and Sweden's Gotland Island stopped working on Sunday.
The incidents came at a time of heightened tension with Russia, and Pistorius said "nobody believes that these cables were cut accidentally".
The Swedish and Lithuanian defence ministers said they were "deeply concerned" that the cable connecting their two countries had been cut.

Vice-President-elect JD Vance is shoring up Senate support for Donald Trump's cabinet picks as he brings attorney general nominee Matt Gaetz along on a visit to the Capitol.
The nomination has caused controversy among Republicans and Democrats, as the House Ethics Committee is expected to meet amid a debate over whether it should release a report on Gaetz.
The report includes the findings of an investigation sparked by allegations against the former congressman of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use, all of which Gaetz has denied.
He resigned from the House of Representatives after Trump announced he wanted the Florida politician to be America's top lawyer. Now that Gaetz is no longer a member of the House, it's uncertain if the report will be made public.

ODN Video: Former UK Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott Dies
A boxer in his youth, John Prescott was never one to back away from a fight. His pugnacity in the ring would transfer to his work with the unions, the Labour Party, and to the top of British government.
Born in North Wales in 1938 and raised in Yorkshire and Cheshire, John Leslie Prescott joined the Merchant Navy after failing the 11+ and leaving school at 15.
He was a member of the National Union of Seamen and was heavily involved in the national strike of 1966.
He became Labour MP for Kingston upon Hull East in the 1970 election. Although he was from the traditional socialist wing of the party, in the early 90s he became an enthusiastic backer of the New Labour project. First helping then-leader John Smith to ditch the union block vote in favour of ‘one member, one vote’. And then, after Smith’s sudden death in 1994, Prescott was elected as deputy Labour leader with Tony Blair securing the top job.
The two men could not have been more different. Whilst the smooth-talking Blair was the man to relay the New Labour message, the unvarnished Prescott rolled into towns on his battle bus to rally traditional Labour supporters.

ODN Video: Joe Biden Pledges Destructive New Missiles and Mines to Ukrainian Army
Concerns that the war between Russia
and Ukraine could escalate beyond
control have risen after US President Joe Biden stepped up
his military aid to Kyiv this week.
Russia has reacted swiftly to the announcements from the Biden administration.
President Vladimir Putin signed a revised nuclear doctrine yesterday in a significant move, which now lowers the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons.
And there are fears of large scale Russian attacks in the days ahead.
The US embassy in Kyiv has temporarily closed, after receiving information of a potential “significant air attack” today.
While the warning is not unusual, it suggests that the embassy fears it could be caught in the crossfire and its employees have been warned to “immediately shelter in the event an air alert is announced”.

ODN Video: Awkward Moments You Missed From the COP29 Summit in Azerbaijan
This year’s COP29 summit in Baku brought together global leaders to discuss the growing threat of climate change. Or at least, it brought some of them together. The leaders of the world’s top 13 carbon polluting countries didn’t show up.
Along with forced smiles and firm handshakes, there were plenty of awkward moments.
The leader of Poland, Andrzej Duda, skipped the official class photo, due to the presence of Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko - one of Russia’s staunchest allies.
Some criticised the choice of Azerbaijan as the host nation, which has been accused of detaining environmental campaigners, while President Ilham Aliyev described oil and gas as 'gifts from god'.
In fact, fossil fuel lobbyists appear to have been welcome at the conference.
And Elnur Soltanov, CEO of the COP29 team, was secretly filmed by the BBC, facilitating a fossil fuels deal on the sidelines of the summit.
Despite much talk on plans to tax harmful meat consumption, there were plenty of meat options on the menu for COP delegates.
It's all led to some sharp criticism of COP29, including from Bangladesh's interim leader Muhammad Yunus.
While there were surprise appearances to speak of, including football icon Ronaldinho…
…it's hard to overlook the absence of leading figures from China, the USA, India and Brazil.
