How To Protect Livestock From Inclement Weather

Livestock enjoy spending most of their time out in the warm, sunny weather as they nibble away at hay and grass. However, as storm clouds appear overhead, you must spring into action. Protecting your farm from the elements matters.

While it’s crucial to ensure your livestock is safe and healthy, you also want to avoid losing the profits or resources needed to keep your farm afloat. It’s essential to remain prepared for unexpected situations, including poor weather. Read on to learn how to protect livestock from inclement weather.

Provide Adequate Food and Water

You must keep your animals fed and nourished while storms rage on. Whether it’s raining, snowing, or windy outside, your livestock need to have access to plenty of food and water.

Depending on the weather, you’ll potentially need to break up ice or replace frozen water with fresh water to keep your livestock hydrated. Performing daily rounds to check on their food and water is a crucial part of protecting livestock from inclement weather and keeping them happy.

Make Your Livestock Feel Comfortable

Whether you’re experiencing a blizzard or a thunderstorm, your livestock needs somewhere comfortable to relax and wait out the rough weather. Having warm, dry bedding allows the animals to relax and is essential for every farm.

Because rainstorms and blizzards cause cold air and moisture, there needs to be enough bedding for each animal to rest on. Additionally, you need to replace soiled bedding when necessary to keep your livestock healthy.

Establish a Sturdy and Secure Shelter

Storms and unexpected weather are one of the main reasons why you need farm shelters for your livestock. Protecting your animals and livestock from the elements is essential; the structure should sustain heavy rain and high winds while keeping your livestock dry.

It’s best to build the shelter on high ground to avoid flooding and offer enough space for each animal to spend time inside. A good rule of thumb is to have enough space for roughly four times the size of each animal’s body.

Maintain Comfortable Temperatures

During the warmer months, excessive heat can quickly become a hazard for your livestock. If you expect a long period of sunny weather, provide your livestock with areas to cool down, such as shaded areas and temperature-controlled spaces.

Additionally, cool water will keep them hydrated during the raging heat. Lastly, if any livestock resides in a shelter, provide proper ventilation to keep them cool and comfortable. Installing fans is a straightforward way to improve airflow considerably.

Having your livestock stay healthy and comfortable during intense weather will allow you to breathe a sigh of relief. Once the storms pass, they’ll return outdoors and stretch out in the sunny fields!

Noon Briefing by Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General. Highlights: Secretary-General/Trip Announcement Deputy Secretary-General Gaza  Occupied Palestinian Territory Lebanon Cyprus Ukraine Russia Senior Personnel Appointment   Yemen Global Risk Report International Days Financial Contribution SECRETARY-GENERAL/TRIP ANNOUNCEMENT The Secretary-General will be arriving in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the 17th Summit of the BRICS countries. The Secretary-General has been invited to speak at an outreach session on “Strengthening multilateralism, economic-financial affairs and artificial intelligence", that will take place on Sunday, 6 July. On Monday, 7 July, he will address a second outreach session, on "Environment, COP30 and global health.” During his visit, the Secretary-General will also be having meetings with various leaders who are attending the BRICS Summit and we will share those readouts with you. DEPUTY SECRETARY-GENERAL Our Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, returned to Seville today for the closing of the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FFD4). At the closing with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez of Spain, she underscored the consensus around the Seville Agreement as a demonstration of multilateralism in action — with actions to close the SDG financing gap, address the debt crisis, and reform the international financial architecture. She recognized the more than 100 initiatives launched on the Sevilla Platform for Action, including solidarity levies on private jets and first-class travel to generate new resources for sustainable development. She said that the UN will be operationalizing a Seville Forum on Debt to help countries learn from one another and coordinate their approaches in debt management and restructuring; that forum will be supported by Spain. She called for FFD4 to be remembered not only as a conference that responded to crisis, but as the moment the world chose cooperation over fragmentation, unity over division, and action over inertia. Tomorrow, she will travel to Praia, Cabo Verde, to take part in celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the country’s independence. GAZA  The Secretary-General is appalled by the deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Multiple attacks in recent days hitting sites hosting displaced people and people trying to access food have killed and injured scores of Palestinians. The Secretary-General strongly condemns the civilian loss of life.  In just one day this week, Israeli orders to relocate forced nearly 30,000 people to flee, yet again, with no safe place to go and clearly inadequate supplies of shelter, food, medicine or water. International humanitarian law is unambiguous: civilians must be respected and protected, and the needs of the population must be met. With no fuel having entered Gaza in more than 17 weeks, the Secretary-General is gravely concerned that the last lifelines for survival are being cut off. Without an urgent influx of fuel, incubators will shut down, ambulances will be unable to reach the injured and sick, and water cannot be purified. The delivery by the United Nations and partners of what little of our lifesaving humanitarian aid is left in Gaza will also grind to a halt.  He once again calls for full, safe and sustained humanitarian access so aid can reach people who have been deprived of the basics of life for far too long. The UN has a clear and proven plan, rooted in the humanitarian principles, to get vital assistance to civilians – safely and at scale, wherever they are.  The Secretary-General reiterates that all parties must uphold their obligations under international law. He renews his call for an immediate permanent ceasefire and for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups.  Full Highlights: https://www.un.org/sg/en/content/noon-briefing-highlight?date%5Bvalue%5D%5Bdate%5D=03%20July%202025

America’s most treasured national parks are getting crunched by Trump’s government-shrinking layoffs just as the summer travel season gets into full swing. Top officials vowed to hire thousands of seasonal employees to pick up the slack after the Trump administration fired around 1,000 NPS employees as part of wide-ranging federal firings known as the “Valentine’s Day Massacre.” Department of Interior officials said in a February memo they would aim to hire 7,700 seasonal workers at NPS, and post listings for 9,000 jobs. But those numbers haven’t materialized ahead of July 4th — the parks’ busiest time of the year. Internal National Park Service data provided to CNN by the National Parks Conservation Association shows that about 4,500 seasonal and temporary staff have been hired. The Palestinian armed group said on Friday night that it was "seriously ready to enter immediately into a round of negotiations", but it did not confirm whether it accepted the terms. A senior Palestinian official told the BBC that Hamas had requested several changes, including a halt to a US-backed aid system and a US guarantee that the war would not resume if talks on ending the war failed. Israel's government has not commented. US President Donald Trump said he had not been briefed but that it was "good" Hamas had responded positively. Play Video: Kyiv in Turmoil After Russia’s BIGGEST Aerial Attack on the City

These videos show what Ukraine’s capital city Kyiv, looked like overnight, as Russia launched its largest aerial attack on the city since the war began in 2022. Here's what we know so far: According to Ukrainian authorities, last night’s strikes hit almost every district of the capital. Air raid sirens sounded for over eight hours in Kyiv, which according to the Ukrainian Air Force, was the ‘main target of the strikes’. Thousands of people took refuge in underground shelters and the city’s subway tunnels. The key details: Ukraine claims Russia deployed 550 drones and 11 missiles in the attack, making it the largest Russian attack on the area throughout the entire war. 72 of the 550 drones launched were able to penetrate air defences - an increase from the previous record of 537 which were launched last Saturday night. The attack injured at least 20 people, as well as destroying infrastructure and residential buildings in the area. Here's the context: These attacks come as part of a string of recent major Russian air strikes in Ukraine, showing that ceasefire talks have been largely unsuccessful. In a lengthy phone call with US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin maintained that Russia will achieve its goals - namely to eliminate the root causes which they say led to the current state of affairs. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed that this call took place ‘almost simultaneously’ with the first air raid alerts in Ukraine. The reaction: Zelenskyy took to X to reflect on the attack. Despite the phone call between Trump and Putin, he said that Russia is showing it has no intention of ending the war and terror. Putting pressure on US President Donal Trump, he also said that Russia must feel appropriate sanctions, and it depends, primarily, on the United States. Trump had expressed his frustration towards Putin after their phone call, saying he was ‘disappointed’ in him. The two leaders are expected to speak on the phone today about the paused US shipments of military aid to Ukraine. Gaza's Health Ministry says at least 138 Palestinians have been killed in the past day - 63 of them while seeking humanitarian aid. (Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe) But many people are pinning their hopes on an imminent ceasefire. Hamas officials say they are studying proposals for a 60-day halt to the fighting, while President Trump said last night he expected the group to respond within 24 hours. It was a harsh and sleepless night for the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, as President Zelenskyy put it, after Russia launched a record number of drones and missiles in a barrage lasting more than seven hours. (Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe) Dozens of people were injured and one man was killed, while the smoke blanketing the city was so toxic residents were warned to keep their windows closed. Mr Zelenskyy spoke to President Trump this afternoon - and said both men had agreed to "work on increasing airspace protection". He also said Ukraine would step up production of interceptor drones to shoot down Russian attack drones. ----------------------- Follow us: Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Channel4News/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/Channel4News TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@c4news Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/channel4news/

Russia launched a record 550 drones across Ukraine last night - 72 made it through. [Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe] Ukraine's capital city Kyiv took the most damage. A city that Vladimir Putin thinks should still be in Russia. And the bombs are falling harder and faster than ever before. Ukraine’s ability to defend itself still relies heavily on US weapons, which President Trump announced this week were now in such short supply that America needed to concentrate on restocking it’s own supplies. Trump meets President Zelenskyy today, having spoken to President Putin on the phone earlier but making zero progress. Trump says he was "very disappointed" with the conversation. Quite the understatement for the man who’d boasted while campaigning to be President that he’d somehow end the carnage in Ukraine within a day. ------- Get more news at our site - https://www.channel4.com/news/ Follow us: TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@c4news Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/channel4news/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/Channel4News Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Channel4News/

In Calais we speak to some of the thousands of migrants hoping to cross from northern France, on small boats, into the UK - risking their lives in the process. [Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe] More than 20,000 people have crossed the Channel in small boats so far this year - and the Government has promised to tackle the smuggling gangs behind the dangerous journeys. France and the UK are jointly funding police operations along the French coast - and both countries are considering a "one in, one out" deal, allowing French officers to venture further from the shoreline to stop boats from leaving. That may be revealed when President Macron visits London next week. ------- Get more news at our site - https://www.channel4.com/news/ Follow us: TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@c4news Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/channel4news/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/Channel4News Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Channel4News/
