“Multilateralism is alive. It's playing a role and the proof of that is the fact that I'm here with the European Union,” United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said on Wednesday, emphasizing the bloc’s strategic role in global stability. António Guterres today (20 March) met with the leaders of the 27 member states of the European Union during a working lunch as part of a European Summit in Brussels. Speaking to reporters alongside European Council President Antonio Costa in Brussels, Guterres thanked the EU for its “continued financial support and political support” to the UN, calling the bloc a “fundamental pillar” in addressing global crises, including peace and security, climate change, sustainable development, and human rights. Addressing the war in Ukraine, Guterres welcomed any ceasefire but stressed that it must lead to a “just peace” that follows “the UN Charter, international law, and Security Council resolutions, namely about the territorial integrity of Ukraine.” Turning to the Middle East, Guterres expressed deep concern over renewed violence in Gaza. “I’m saddened and shocked because deaths and destruction are back in Gaza and the Palestinian people has already suffered too much,” he said. He reiterated his call for “respect of the ceasefire, for an unimpeded humanitarian access to all areas of Gaza and for the immediate and unconditional release of the hostages.” On climate action, Guterres cited a new World Meteorological Organization report warning of worsening global warming impacts. “I now used to listen time and time again that we are living in the hottest day of the hottest months of the hottest year of the hottest decade,” he said. However, the Secretary-General insisted that keeping global warming within 1.5°C remains possible but requires urgent action. “We need to double down. Double down in reduction of emissions. Double down in decarbonization and double down in the replacement of fossil fuel by renewable energy.”

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has faced backlash since he was appointed head of the controversial Department for Government Efficiency and charged with taking an axe to federal government spending. Musk has also intervened in politics abroad, making a video appearance at a rally for the far-right party Alternative für Deutschland ahead of Germany's parliamentary election, and launching online attacks on British politicians. Some who do not share his views, have protested outside dozens of Tesla dealerships, not only in the US, but also in Canada, the UK, Germany and Portugal. What is hard to quantify is exactly how much impact all this has had on Tesla as a business - and the extent to which Musk's views and involvement in the Trump administration has affected the brand and alienated some traditional electric vehicle buyers. Authorities in Turkey have arrested dozens of people for "provocative" social media posts after the mayor of Istanbul Ekrem Imamoglu was detained on Wednesday. Imamoglu was one of more than 100 people held on charges including corruption and aiding terrorist groups - a move that has sparked protests in Istanbul and the capital Ankara. A member of the secular Republican People's Party, Imamoglu is a key rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and was set to be named a presidential candidate for the 2028 elections later this week. Critics say his arrest is a "coup" and are planning further demonstrations, despite Istanbul's pro-Erdogan governor banning protests for four days. The Hamas-run civil defence agency has said at least 55 Palestinians have been killed in overnight Israeli air strikes in Gaza. Israel resumed its bombing campaign and ground operations in the territory this week, with air strikes killing more than 430 people over two days, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. Hamas says the ground operation announced by Israel on Wednesday is a "new and dangerous" violation of the ceasefire deal. Israel resumed attacks on Tuesday as talks to extend the deal failed to progress. Israel has warned that attacks will intensify in Gaza until Hamas releases the remaining hostages.
