*Agnes’s story is one of resilience, pain, and hope. After losing everything to a volcanic eruption in the East of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2002, she was left to raise a child alone—abandoned by a UN peacekeeper who fathered her child. Today, with the help of the Trust Fund in support of victims of sexual exploitation and abuse, Agnes has started to rebuild her life, but her daughter longs for a father whom she doesn’t know. The United Nations calls on Member States to take action and ensure children fathered by peacekeepers receive the recognition, care, and support they urgently deserve. Press conference by Mr. Li Junhua, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, Mr. Shantanu Mukherjee, Director, Economic Analysis and Policy Division at UN DESA and Mr. Hamid Rashid, Chief, Global Economic Monitoring Branch, Economic Analysis and Policy Division at UN DESA, on the launch of the World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) report 2025. The WESP report will also be launched regionally in Bangkok, Beirut, Geneva, Mexico, Moscow and New Delhi in early January. --- According to a UN flagship report released today (9 Jan), the global economic growth is projected to remain at 2.8 percent in 2025, unchanged from this past year. The World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) 2025 report shows that despite withstanding a series of mutually reinforcing shocks, global economic growth has stagnated and remains below the pre-pandemic annual average of 3.2 percent. The report produced by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), highlights the enduring impact of weak investment, sluggish productivity, and high debt levels on global economic performance. It also underscores the importance of global cooperation and prudent policies to lift growth and place it on a stable and equitable pathway that can accelerate progress towards the SDGs. Talking to the press today, Li Junhua, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, said, “Our current assessment indicates that the world economy has largely avoided a broad-based contraction despite the unprecedented shocks of the last few years, and the most prolonged period of monetary tightening in recent history. For 2025, we project a global growth of 2.8 percent, similar to 2024. Lower inflation, monetary easing, and the recovery of international trade underpin this relatively stable outlook.” He added, “Nevertheless, we note that this rate remains well below the pre-pandemic average of 3.2 percent, recorded over 2010-2019. The recovery remains uneven, driven primarily by a few large economies. Subdued growth prospects pose significant challenges, particularly for developing countries.” This year’s thematic chapter takes a deep dive into the subject of critical minerals for the energy transition that can ramp up climate action while presenting opportunities for many developing countries to create jobs, generate public revenues and reduce poverty and inequality. He said, “Addressing debt challenges, curbing illicit financial flows and strengthening domestic resource mobilization can increase the public revenues for investing in the SDGs. For many countries, the rising global demand for minerals critical for the energy transition presents a unique opportunity to stimulate growth, create jobs, and reduce poverty and inequality.” Such favorable outcomes are not inevitable, however, and need coherent national policies as well as international support to become possible. Li Junhua concluded, “Urgent actions are needed to address the debt sustainability challenges in many countries; to close the gaps in technology, financing, and infrastructure that hinder equitable growth; and to ensure that an accelerated energy transition reduces climate risks for all. The challenges we face are complex, but the solutions are within our reach – if we work together.”

Noon Briefing by Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General. Highlights: - United States - Lebanon - Gaza - Occupied Palestinian Territory - Syria - Yemen - Security Council - Democratic People’s Republic of Korea - Ukraine - Honour Roll UNITED STATES Today, the Secretary-General was in Washington D.C. where he attended the State Funeral for President Jimmy Carter, at the invitation of the former President’s family. And as you saw in a statement issued this morning, the Secretary-General expressed his shock and sadness by the widespread devastation caused by the fast-moving wildfires in Los Angeles. The Secretary-General extends his sincere condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. His thoughts are with the tens of thousands of people who have been forced to evacuate, as well as with the residents whose homes have been destroyed by the fires. The Secretary-General commends the courage of the firefighters and all the first responders who are responding to this devastation. The United Nations stands ready to provide assistance if required or needed by the United States.  LEBANON You also saw this morning that there was an election in the Parliament in Lebanon, and the Secretary-General congratulates General Joseph Aoun as he takes function as President of the Republic of Lebanon. This is a critical step towards overcoming Lebanon’s political and institutional impasse after over 2 years of presidential vacuum. The election of the President provides an important opportunity to empower the state institutions to address the country's multi-faceted crises. We encourage the swift formation of a new Government to provide Lebanese people with functioning state institutions that address their needs and aspirations. As stated by our Special Coordinator Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, “The election of a President offers renewed hope and an opportunity to pave the way for progress towards consolidating the cessation of hostilities and preserving the country’s security and the country’s stability. We underscore the United Nations’ continued commitment and support in this regard. And we obviously look forward to working with President and relevant authorities to support Lebanon as it takes meaningful and measurable steps in this direction. GAZA The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) today said that according to the Gaza Ministry of Health, over 46,000 Palestinians have now been killed in the Gaza Strip since October 2023, most of these people were women and children. Tragically, eight newborn babies died of hypothermia in the last month alone. Hostilities are continuing, with relentless operations by the Israeli Defense Forces, causing mass casualties and widespread destruction. The conditions are particularly alarming in besieged North Gaza, where the movement of humanitarian personnel is heavily restricted. Rocket fire by Palestinian armed groups towards Israel also continues, endangering civilians there, as well.  The Secretary-General again strongly condemns the widespread killing of - and injury to - civilians in this conflict. He calls on all to respect international humanitarian law and demands the protection of all civilians. Civilians must be protected and respected at all times and their essential needs must be met. There must be an immediate ceasefire and the immediate and unconditional release of all the hostages being held in Gaza. Last May, Trump was convicted on 34 counts relating to hush money paid to adult-film star Stormy Daniels. On Friday, he was sentenced to "unconditional discharge" on all counts. Paying hush money is not illegal in New York, but the charges stem from how Trump reimbursed his lawyer, who paid Daniels. The US has announced a $25m reward for information leading to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s arrest. The announcement came as Maduro was sworn in for a third six-year term on Friday. Maduro was declared the winner of July’s presidential election by the official electoral commission. But the opposition and many countries, including the US, rejected the result as illegitimate. They recognise opposition candidate Edmundo González as the legitimate president-elect. González fled Venezuela in September and has been living in Spain since then. The opposition insists their candidate, González, won by a landslide based on ballot data. Machado was briefly detained and forced to record a 20-second proof-of-life video. Her aides later said the video was coerced and described her detention as a “kidnapping". The FBI is investigating after a Quebec water bomber fighting the Palisades Fire in Los Angeles was grounded after colliding with a drone flying in restricted airspace, officials said. Two planes from Quebec, operated by the firefighting agency SOPFEU, have been fighting the wildfires since Tuesday. The agency confirmed it will send two additional air tankers on Jan. 15. Firefighters say the planes are vital to California’s wildfire operations. “They’re extremely important … every year we make a big deal out of them coming in,” said Christopher Thomas, a spokesperson with the state’s firefighting agency, Cal Fire. #Wildfires #Palisades #LosAngeles #California #News #CBCNews Read more: http://www.cbc.ca/news »»» Subscribe to CBC News to watch more videos: http://bit.ly/1RreYWS Connect with CBC News Online: For breaking news, video, audio and in-depth coverage: http://bit.ly/1Z0m6iX Follow CBC News on TikTok: https://bit.ly/3TnHioe Follow CBC News on Twitter: http://bit.ly/1sA5P9H Find CBC News on Facebook: http://bit.ly/1WjG36m Follow CBC News on Instagram: http://bit.ly/1Z0iE7O Subscribe to CBC News on Snapchat: https://bit.ly/3leaWsr Download the CBC News app for iOS: http://apple.co/25mpsUz Download the CBC News app for Android: http://bit.ly/1XxuozZ »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» For more than 80 years, CBC News has been the source Canadians turn to, to keep them informed about their communities, their country and their world. Banditry is booming in Nigeria, with thousands kidnapped last year. (Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe) The mass abduction of schoolchildren is a terrifyingly common occurrence. Just days ago gunmen on motorbikes kidnapped at least 46 people and torched homes in the northwestern Zamfara State. Wildfires have struck fear into residents of America's second biggest city. (Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe) Around 70,000 people have now been ordered to evacuate - among them, the ultra-rich and ultra-poor. Three major wildfires are currently blazing out of control across the Los Angeles area. A fourth has been controlled. The Eaton fire, near Pasadena, has killed two people and burned more than 2,000 acres. Another is in Hurst, a rural community in the San Fernando Valley. But the largest is the Palisades blaze. It has already consumed more than 5,000 acres in the affluent Pacific Palisades neighbourhood and is now threatening parts of Santa Monica. And all three fires are “zero percent contained” according to fire officials. ----------------------- Follow us: Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Channel4News/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/Channel4News TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@c4news Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/channel4news/
