United Nations Video: Putting Victims' Rights First: Supporting Children Born from Peacekeeper Misconduct | United Nations
*Agnes’s story is one of resilience, pain, and hope. After losing everything to a volcanic eruption in the East of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2002, she was left to raise a child alone—abandoned by a UN peacekeeper who fathered her child. Today, with the help of the Trust Fund in support of victims of sexual exploitation and abuse, Agnes has started to rebuild her life, but her daughter longs for a father whom she doesn’t know.
The United Nations calls on Member States to take action and ensure children fathered by peacekeepers receive the recognition, care, and support they urgently deserve.

United Nations Video: UN Report: Global Growth Stagnates at 2.8% for 2025, Below Pre-Pandemic Levels- Press Conference
Press conference by Mr. Li Junhua, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, Mr. Shantanu Mukherjee, Director, Economic Analysis and Policy Division at UN DESA and Mr. Hamid Rashid, Chief, Global Economic Monitoring Branch, Economic Analysis and Policy Division at UN DESA, on the launch of the World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) report 2025.
The WESP report will also be launched regionally in Bangkok, Beirut, Geneva, Mexico, Moscow and New Delhi in early January.
---
According to a UN flagship report released today (9 Jan), the global economic growth is projected to remain at 2.8 percent in 2025, unchanged from this past year.
The World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) 2025 report shows that despite withstanding a series of mutually reinforcing shocks, global economic growth has stagnated and remains below the pre-pandemic annual average of 3.2 percent.
The report produced by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), highlights the enduring impact of weak investment, sluggish productivity, and high debt levels on global economic performance.
It also underscores the importance of global cooperation and prudent policies to lift growth and place it on a stable and equitable pathway that can accelerate progress towards the SDGs.
Talking to the press today, Li Junhua, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, said, “Our current assessment indicates that the world economy has largely avoided a broad-based contraction despite the unprecedented shocks of the last few years, and the most prolonged period of monetary tightening in recent history. For 2025, we project a global growth of 2.8 percent, similar to 2024. Lower inflation, monetary easing, and the recovery of international trade underpin this relatively stable outlook.”
He added, “Nevertheless, we note that this rate remains well below the pre-pandemic average of 3.2 percent, recorded over 2010-2019. The recovery remains uneven, driven primarily by a few large economies. Subdued growth prospects pose significant challenges, particularly for developing countries.”
This year’s thematic chapter takes a deep dive into the subject of critical minerals for the energy transition that can ramp up climate action while presenting opportunities for many developing countries to create jobs, generate public revenues and reduce poverty and inequality.
He said, “Addressing debt challenges, curbing illicit financial flows and strengthening domestic resource mobilization can increase the public revenues for investing in the SDGs. For many countries, the rising global demand for minerals critical for the energy transition presents a unique opportunity to stimulate growth, create jobs, and reduce poverty and inequality.”
Such favorable outcomes are not inevitable, however, and need coherent national policies as well as international support to become possible.
Li Junhua concluded, “Urgent actions are needed to address the debt sustainability challenges in many countries; to close the gaps in technology, financing, and infrastructure that hinder equitable growth; and to ensure that an accelerated energy transition reduces climate risks for all. The challenges we face are complex, but the solutions are within our reach – if we work together.”

Aerial crews have been bombarding the flaming hills with water and fire retardant to hold back the Palisades fire, which is now menacing Brentwood, home to the world-famous Getty Center art museum.

BBC News Video: Resale tickets price to be capped in UK | BBC News
The UK government has announced plans to cap the price of resale tickets in a clamp-down on ticket touts who bulk buy tickets and then resell them for huge profits.
They are also putting out a call for evidence on dynamic pricing after Oasis fans were charged £200 more than advertised for tickets to their reunion tour.
The cap would also apply to tickets in the live events industry including sport, music, comedy and theatre.
They will launch a consultation to seek views on capping resale prices on a range, from the original price to up to a 30% uplift, and limiting the number of tickets resellers can sell.

BBC News Video: What does Donald Trump’s presidency means for West Bank settlements? | BBC News
Donald Trump’s re-election as US President this month is seen by many Israeli settlers as an opportunity to press ahead with the annexation of the occupied West Bank.
Israeli settlements have doubled in the last five years and are now home to more than 500,000 settlers.
The settlements are viewed as illegal by the UN's top court and most other countries, but Israel disputes that.
Israel's far-right Finance Minister, Bezalel Smotrich, publicly called for annexing the Israeli settlements in the West Bank following Trump’s election victory in November, but formal annexation has so far remained a dream for settlers.

ODN Video: ‘It’s a Political Witch Hunt’: Trump Comments on Stormy Daniels Hush Money Case after Ruling
US President-elect Donald Trump dodged jail time and punishments for his conviction in the New York hush money case.
Trump received a rare ‘unconditional discharge’ sentence from the judge, meaning he won’t have to serve time or pay a fine but will have a conviction on his permanent record.
The sentencing comes after a jury found Trump guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records. These relate to alleged legally hidden payments to adult-film star Stormy Daniels, who claims it was to hide a ‘sexual encounter’ with Trump - allegations which he denies.

ODN Video: US Offers $25m Reward For Arrest of Venezuela's Maduro President Maduro
The US has announced a $25m reward for information leading to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s arrest.
The announcement came as Maduro was sworn in for a third six-year term on Friday.
Maduro was declared the winner of July’s presidential election by the official electoral commission.
But the opposition and many countries, including the US, rejected the result as illegitimate.
They recognise opposition candidate Edmundo González as the legitimate president-elect.
González fled Venezuela in September and has been living in Spain since then.
The opposition insists their candidate, González, won by a landslide based on ballot data.

She was seen exiting the rally on a motorbike in Caracas on Thursday before her team reported her arrest.
Security forces “violently intercepted” her motorcycle convoy, according to her aides.
Machado was briefly detained and forced to record a 20-second proof-of-life video.
Her aides later said the video was coerced and described her detention as a “kidnapping".
The protest aimed to block Nicolás Maduro from being sworn in for a third six-year term as president.

International Video: 70,000 evacuated as Los Angeles wildfires rage out of control
Wildfires have struck fear into residents of America's second biggest city.
(Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Around 70,000 people have now been ordered to evacuate - among them, the ultra-rich and ultra-poor.
Three major wildfires are currently blazing out of control across the Los Angeles area. A fourth has been controlled.
The Eaton fire, near Pasadena, has killed two people and burned more than 2,000 acres.
Another is in Hurst, a rural community in the San Fernando Valley.
But the largest is the Palisades blaze. It has already consumed more than 5,000 acres in the affluent Pacific Palisades neighbourhood and is now threatening parts of Santa Monica.
And all three fires are “zero percent contained” according to fire officials.
