Press conference by Angeli Achrekar, Deputy Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), on the launch of the 2024 World AIDS Day report: Take the rights path.
------
The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) launched its 2024 report ‘Take the rights path to end AIDS.’
Speaking at a press briefing in New York today (26 Nov), Angeli Achrekar, UNAIDS Deputy Executive Director noted, “As we approach World AIDS Day, we always take a moment to remember the over 42 million lives that have been lost to AIDS. We also take a moment to recommit to our shared goal of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.”
The newly launched report highlights both achievements and remaining gaps in addressing the global epidemic. Achrekar noted that “more than 30 million people living with HIV are alive today and thriving because they are on life-saving treatment. AIDS deaths have plummeted by 70 percent since their peak.”
However, significant challenges persist. Achrekar said, “Today, 1.3 million people around the world acquire HIV and AIDS. This is three times higher than the 2025 target that the globe is set to achieve.”
She underscored the disproportionate impact on vulnerable populations, adding, “Adolescent girls and young women” are among the populations that are “hardest to reach and hardest to find.”
Achrekar called for a continued focus on rights-based approaches to tackle the epidemic, “We must make sure that we continue to succeed on the path of ending AIDS as a public health threat by addressing the rights that people face,” she said.
Despite progress, the report reveals concerning trends. “In 28 countries, the number of new HIV infections is on the rise, and of the nearly 40 million people living with HIV, 9.3 million people are still in need of treatment,” Achrekar warned.
World AIDS Day, observed annually on December 1, shines a spotlight on the ongoing fight against HIV/AIDS, urging the world to renew its commitment to ending the epidemic once and for all.

United Nations Video: Gaza: Unprecedented surge in aid worker casualties - Security Council Briefing | United Nations
Briefing by Lisa Doughten, Director, Financing and Partnerships Division, Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), on the protection of civilians in armed conflict.
----------------------------
A top humanitarian official told the Security Council that “much of the unprecedented surge in aid worker casualties is due to the situation in Gaza,” to which, she said, “there's no situation in recent history that compares.”
Lisa Doughten, who is the Director of the Financing and Partnerships Division at the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said, “since 7th October, more than 330 humanitarian workers have lost their lives. Most of them were UNWRA staff. Some were with their families in their homes. Others were at work in UNWRA offices and shelters.”
Doughten said, “these numbers signal a disturbing lack of regard for the lives of civilians and humanitarian and UN workers.”
The humanitarian official said, “over the years, many of us working for the UN and for the humanitarian sector have lost colleagues and friends, people who devoted their lives to support their fellow human beings in their time of need. But the past two years in particular have been devastating.”

Thousands of Lebanese civilians are returning to their destroyed homes, hours after a ceasefire between Israel and the Iran-back armed group Hezbollah came into effect.
Traffic jams built up on the main highway out of Beirut to southern Lebanon as people queued up to return home.
Many were seen waving Hezbollah flags and posters showing the group's deceased former leader Hassan Nasrallah.
The US-brokered ceasefire has put a temporary end to nearly 14 months of conflict that intensified when Israel launched a ground invasion against Hezbollah in October.

ODN Video: Israel-Hezbollah Ceasefire Brings ‘Relief’ After Over a Year of Fighting
A ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah officially came into effect at 4am Wednesday, ending over a year of fighting.
Mediated by France and the US, the agreement aims for a "permanent cessation of hostilities."
The deal requires Israel to withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon within 60 days, while Hezbollah must retreat beyond the Litani River, allowing Lebanese government forces to take control of these areas.
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati welcomed the ceasefire, calling it a "fundamental step" toward calm and stability.
However, he also emphasised that Israel must fully comply with the agreement and respect UN resolutions.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the ceasefire would allow Israel to shift its focus to other threats, particularly from Iran.
