Ghanim Mohammed Al Muftah, United Nations youth representative from Qatar and a political science graduate, said that the decisions made today are not just about policies and strategies. They are about shaping a world where all children can thrive in an inclusive, safe and sustainable future. “As a person with disability, I have learned that true progress comes not from overcoming personal challenges alone, but from how we, as a society, embrace each other’s differences,” he said. Sadly, there is no choice for children where wars and conflicts cause unnecessary injuries and life-long disabilities. It is in our hands to stop this global trend of violence, in Gaza and around the world. “The future belongs to our youth and we must ensure that they are prepared to take on leadership roles,” he said. -------------------------- The Summit of the Future (22-23 September 2024) is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to enhance cooperation on critical challenges and address gaps in global governance, reaffirm existing commitments including to the Sustainable Development Goals and the United Nations Charter, and move towards a reinvigorated multilateral system that is better positioned to positively impact people’s lives. The Summit of the Future is a high-level event, bringing world leaders together to forge a new international consensus on how we deliver a better present and safeguard the future. Effective global cooperation is increasingly critical to our survival but difficult to achieve in an atmosphere of mistrust, using outdated structures that no longer reflect today’s political and economic realities. World leaders will convene at the United Nations to adopt the Pact for the Future, which will include a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations as annexes. Speaking to journalists, former Deputy Speaker of the Afghan parliament Fawziya Koofi said, “it's a government of Taliban, by Taliban, for Taliban in Afghanistan. Nobody else is part of that. So, it's not only women who are affected, it's the men who are affected. We are a bit disappointed for the fact that men do not stand to the extent that they should in our support. But it's a very difficult situation. And, you know, there are unrest, extrajudicial killing, arbitrary detention of people. People are enforced, disappeared. So, we understand the situation. But I think those fathers, those brothers, and those husbands who are coming to us as their representative in the last 20 years, we want to see them now in solidarity, in action. We want them to help us reclaim our country.” For her part, former Director General of Human Rights and Women’s International Affairs at the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs Asila Wardak said, “this fight is not only Afghan woman's fight. This is this should be a global fight against terrorism, against extremism. Because nowadays, you know, in Afghanistan, the level of extremism that's growing up, it's not only women. It will not remain only for Afghanistan but will soon go to the neighbouring countries and also to the world. So, this is a joint effort in joint responsibility, and it should be a giant fight know.” The Aghan women, including the former Afghanistan’s Minister for Women's Affairs Habiba Sarabi, were joined by the head of the Political and Peacebuilding Department, Rosemary Di Carlo, former Swedish foreign minister Margot Wallström and Streep.

Lebanon, Occupied Palestinian territory, Gaza & other topics - Daily Press Briefing (23 Sep 2024)
Play Video: Lebanon, Occupied Palestinian territory, Gaza & other topics - Daily Press Briefing (23 Sep 2024)

Noon briefing by Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General. Highlights: -Lebanon -Lebanon/humanitarian -Occupied Palestinian territory -Gaza -Syria -Sudan -Ukraine -Summit of the Future -Afghanistan -Briefings -SDG Media Zone -Week by the numbers -Day of Sign Languages LEBANON The Secretary-General is indeed alarmed by the escalating situation along the Blue Line. He’s very concerned about the large number of civilian casualties being reported by the Lebanese authorities, as well as the thousands of displaced persons, amidst the most intense exchange of fire across the Blue Line since October of last year. He expresses grave concern for the safety of civilians both in southern Lebanon and in Northern Israel, as well as the UN staff in those areas. The Secretary-General notes the ongoing efforts by the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon and the UN Peacekeeping Force in Lebanon to reduce tensions and reiterates the urgent need for de-escalation and that all efforts be devoted to a diplomatic solution. Our Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeannine Hennis-Plasschaert, is currently in Israel where she is meeting with Israeli officials as we speak to discuss the latest situation. Meanwhile the Head of Mission and Force Commander, Lt. Gen. Aroldo Lázaro, has been in contact with both Lebanese and Israeli parties, emphasizing the urgent need for de-escalation. Efforts are ongoing to reduce tensions and halt the shelling. Their message from both the Special Coordinator and the Head of the UN Peacekeeping Force is the same, which is there is no military solution that will make either side safer. With the wellbeing of civilians on both sides of the Blue Line and the stability of the region at stake, space must be given for diplomatic efforts to succeed. All involved parties in this conflict must honour their responsibilities to protect civilians and ensure the safety and security of all UN personnel and assets. The Secretary-General urges all parties to recommit to the full implementation of Security Council resolution 1701 and immediately return to a cessation of hostilities and to restore stability. We do expect a more official statement to be issued at some point. LEBANON/HUMANITARIAN On the humanitarian front, our Humanitarian Coordinator for Lebanon Imran Riza, met with Lebanese Government officials, including the Prime Minister, Najib Miqati, and the Minister of Environment, Nasser Yassin. Our humanitarian agencies and others also participated in those discussion. At these talks, the Lebanese Government announced the activation of an emergency operations centre and also that schools ought to be designated as shelters. The Ministry of Education in Lebanon had announced the closure of all public and private schools for tomorrow. Many people are being displaced from areas impacted by the airstrikes, with heavy traffic reported toward Beirut and Mount Lebanon regions. Also, on the Israeli side, during the weekend and following an uptick of hostilities, Israel’s Military Home Command announced that schools in northern Israel, which run from Sunday to Friday, have been closed until at least today until 6 p.m. local time. Humanitarian organizations urgently need $50 million to preposition basic needs – such as food and shelter supplies – for an immediate response for the next two to four weeks in southern Lebanon, Lebanon in general. Our colleagues at OCHA tell us that, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health, more than 274 people have been killed and at least 700 injured, including women and children, following the continued airstrikes in southern Lebanon. Israeli airstrikes have killed at least 492 people in Lebanon in a single day, according to the authorities there, as the conflict escalated into full-scale war. More than 1,600 people were reported to have been injured. Tens of thousands of people in southern Lebanon fled their homes and headed north on the main road to the capital Beirut in the face of the Israeli assault. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the aim was to change the “security balance” along its northern border. Hezbollah militia, backed by Iran, have been firing rockets across the border into Israel since the Hamas attack of October 7th which led to the war in Gaza. Israel Defence Forces said it had hit more than 1,300 Hezbollah targets in 24 hours. Hezbollah was reported to have fired 35 rockets into Israel, with no reports of any casualties. The conflict in Lebanon has escalated sharply in recent days, after pagers and radio handsets exploded, killing and injuring many members of Hezbollah. Israel has not admitted responsibility but is widely regarded as having been behind the attacks. Lebanon's health ministry says at least 356 people have been killed and more than 1,200 wounded in Israeli strikes today - the deadliest day of the Israel-Hezbollah conflict since 2006. Israel says it is "broadening" its strikes against Hezbollah as citizens in southern Lebanon have received phone messages warning them to leave places used by the Iran-backed group. Lebanon's prime minister says Israel's actions amount to "a war of extermination", while Israel's defence minister says strikes will continue "until we achieve our goals - to return the residents of the north safely to their homes." Fears of an all-out regional conflict in the Middle East have grown in the past week. A Toronto rapper was released from custody on Monday after the Crown stayed a first-degree murder charge against him. Hassan Ali, known by his rap moniker Top 5, had been charged in the 2021 death of Hashim Omar Hashi, a 20-year-old accounting student. Hashi was gunned down while attempting to drive his vehicle into the parking garage of his apartment on Jan. 31, 2021, according to Toronto police. Two weeks later, Ali was arrested in California and charged. He had served three years in custody and was about to undergo trial when the decision was announced Monday in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. Charges are stayed when a judge or the Crown decides it would be bad for the justice system for the case to continue, and the issue of guilt or innocence is never determined, according to the Community Legal Education of Ontario. The Crown has one year to reopen the case, and if the year passes, the charges can’t be brought back. The Crown suspended its case against Ali after the judge would not allow his videos or social media posts to be used as evidence in the trial. Prosecutors argued the shooting was gang-related and that Ali was behind the plot. Ali’s lawyer, Gary Grill, told reporters the evidence against his client was “entirely circumstantial.” CBC has reached out to Ontario's Attorney General's office, but has not yet heard back.
