D.C. police officer Daniel Hodges, who was injured during the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, criticized President Donald Trump’s pardons of those who participated in the attack. On Monday, President Donald Trump pardoned the rioters who had been criminally charged with storming the Capitol under the false belief that the 2020 election had been stolen. Hodges was one of at least 140 law enforcement officers who were injured. One officer, Brian Sicknick, died in the days following the attack. Four more who defended the Capitol that day have since died by suicide. “I was beaten, crushed, kicked, punched, surrounded. Someone reached underneath my visor and tried to gouge out my eye,” Hodges said. “And all these people were just pardoned by Donald Trump, who says they were the real victims that they were the patriots. I don’t understand how anyone can believe that.” He appeared with former U.S. Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn and Democratic Reps. Dan Goldman, Jason Crow, Eric Swalwell and Chrissy Houlahan during a news conference to discuss the pardons. Hodges said he hoped the “guardrails that remain in our government are sufficient to preserve the republic for the next four years” and encouraged Americans to ask if Trump is who they want to represent them. “While he has been elected, those in Congress who enable him are still answerable to you,” Hodges said. “They're afraid of losing their jobs precisely because too many people offer their unwavering support for Donald Trump.” Hodges noted that the Jan. 6 rioters could try to attack the Capitol again. “Myself, I'll be there if I'm needed. I'll do it all again,” he said. Watch PBS News for daily, breaking and live news, plus special coverage. We are home to PBS News Hour, ranked the most credible and objective TV news show. Almost 2,000 Afghans had already been approved to resettle in the U.S. before January 27 — the date President Trump's executive order suspending all refugee admissions into the country was supposed to take effect. Now, tens of thousands of Afghans, including family members of active-duty U.S. service members, are in limbo as their booked flights got canceled and travel plans disrupted. And many of them helped the U.S. during the war. Though the executive action doesn't apply to Afghans approved for Special Immigrant Visas — people who worked for the U.S. armed forces — it will still impact thousands of others. “We're hopeful that he and his administration are ready to come to the table and talk about how we can make a deal to protect these loyal folks that stood by us for 20 years of war,” Shawn VanDiver of AfghanEvac told PBS News’ Laura Barrón-López. “President Trump signed the deal to close us out of Afghanistan. We're confident he is ready to see us through. He just has to know the impacts of the orders that he signed,” VanDiver said. Watch PBS News for daily, breaking and live news, plus special coverage. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., questioned agriculture secretary nominee Brooke Rollins about the impact of potential cuts to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and asked whether she would commit to supporting "robust funding" for the program. "According to recent reports, House Republicans are already eyeing nearly $300 billion in cuts to the SNAP program," Klobuchar said. "I don't yet know what the numbers look like," Rollins responded. "I need to really dig down, but my commitment to you is that we will talk about this until the very last minute." Rollins was answering questions Thursday in her confirmation hearing before the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry. A former White House aide, Rollins served as Trump’s domestic policy chief during his first administration as well as general deputy counsel and policy advisor for former Texas Gov. Rick Perry. Missing ethics materials and financial disclosures delayed Rollins’ confirmation hearing. Watch PBS News for daily, breaking and live news, plus special coverage.
