The 118th Congress spent its final days embroiled in another debacle over a spending bill, and it almost brought the government to the brink of another shutdown. “It’s really stupid politics to be for a government shutdown,” Republican congressman Don Bacon of Nebraska tells Ali Velshi. While some Republicans – like former Trump White House senior adviser Steve Bannon – think the solution to the impasse in Congress is to double down, Rep. Bacon is pushing back on that idea. “Hyper partisanship does not work in a government that has three branches,” says Bacon. “We have checks and balances, and James Madison designed this to insist that there has to be some kind of consensus between various factions -- as those are the words he used -- to get to get stuff done.” Instead of “mob mentality on social media,” Rep. State health officials have framed the move as a way to cut through a backlog of older cases so that the committee’s recommendations will be based on the most recent data available. But it comes after ProPublica’s reporting uncovered three cases of women dying after being denied or delayed abortion care under Texas’ ban and several members of the committee, who spoke to the Washington Post, expressed concerns about not reviewing deaths that could have been caused by delays or denials of care. Yale Philosophy Professor and author Jason Stanley warns, “If you're not informed by the facts, you are literally not free in a democracy. The incoming Trump administration has reportedly started looking into ways to drastically shrink, consolidate or even eliminate the top bank regulators in Washington. This is not smart economics. The FDIC - the Federal Deposit Insurance Company – was created in 1934 during the Great Depression after thousands of banks began to fail. Those who didn't lose their money right away, panicked and withdrew their deposits - causing what's known as a 'bank run' (famously depicted in Capra’s ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’), causing yet more banks to close. The agency was created to restore and maintain the public's confidence in the financial system...and it did. At the end of 1934, only 9 banks had failed compared to the more than 9,000 in the previous four years. Since its creation, no American banking consumer has lost money that was in an FDIC insured account, even when a bank fails.
