The judge says that is because Donald Trump is about to be sworn-in, and assume the legal protections of, the Office of President of the United States. President-elect Trump before the sentencing calls the case a "political witch hunt" to damage his reputation and that the November election result shows the American people agree. We hear from Donald Trump, prosecutor Joshua Steinglass – who decries Donald Trump's attacks on the judicial system – and Judge Juan Merchan, who says, the powers of the presidency are not able to "erase a jury verdict." The Supreme Court hears a challenge to the law banning the TikTok app from the U.S. if Chinese parent company ByteDance does not divest… We hear some of the oral argument and talk with Zach Schoenfeld, The Hill's courts & legal reporter about how the Justices may rule. (20) President Joe Biden gets another update on the response to the wildfires in Los Angeles from Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass (D) and FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell. Labor Department says the U.S. added 256,000 jobs in December and the unemployment rate went down to 4.1 percent. We hear from President Joe Biden, former President Gerald Ford through his son Steven, Jimmy Carter's grandson Jason Carter, and Rev. Andrew Young, civil rights leader and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations in the Carter Administration. President Biden gets a briefing and gives an update on the response to the wildfires in Los Angeles, announcing the federal government will pay 100 percent of the cost for six month and additional resources being sent by the Defense Department. The Senate advances a bill to provide undocumented immigrants charged with theft-related crimes to be detained. The bill is named for Laken Riley, a college student killed by a Venezuelan migrant who had been arrested for shoplifting. The House passes a bill to impose sanctions on International Criminal Court officials for issuing arrest warrants against the Israeli Prime Minister and former Defense Minister over the war in Gaza. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announces the U.S. will provide another $500 million in military assistance to Ukraine, and with President-elect Trump about to be inaugurated, he urges the coalition of NATO and other nations to continue to support Ukraine in its war against Russia, saying, "The coalition must not flinch. We must hold firm to the bedrock principle that aggression is a sin."
