Meet Victor Pavarino, who works for road safety and sustainable mobility in the Determinants of Health and Non-Communicable Diseases Unit of the Pan American Health Organization office in Brazil. "Road traffic injuries kill over a million people every year," says Victor. "My work consists mostly in supporting road safety initiatives, be it for governments, non-state actors, or communities." Victor's work underlines the impact of safety on health. "If I work on better conditions for a sidewalk, not only am I working on a safer environment for pedestrians, but I'm also encouraging active transport. When I make cycle routes, I'm also allowing for cleaner air. Traffic safety is a social development issue, and know that you are promoting inclusion and social equity within road traffic safety prevention motivates me a lot," he says. "In Brazil we had around 30% drop in the last decade in the number of road traffic victims. Just to know that you were part of that effort is very rewarding."
