CDC supports the Health Connection project in Maré, a large informal urban community (also known as a ‘favela’ or ‘slum’) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The project was established in 2020 to ensure that community members got the information, guidance, and resources they needed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Alongside other partners, CDC contributed funding and was later asked to help study the long-term consequences of COVID-19 and vaccine uptake. The Health Connection project remained resilient and continues to serve as a model for how public health partners can work together, engage with communities, and better address people’s needs in similar communities.

WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus speaks about the urgent need to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which is undermining health care globally, and the importance of the World AMR Awareness Week (18 – 24 November).
AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites no longer respond to antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines, leading to infections becoming difficult or impossible to treat, increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness and death.
Key actions to address AMR include: preventing infections; using the right medicines the right way; developing new antibiotics; and reducing the unnecessary use of antimicrobials in health care, agriculture and food production.

World Health Organization Video: LIVE: @DrTedros’ remarks at the 4th Ministerial Conference on #AntimicrobialResistance
Since 1976, health promoters in El Salvador have been key to bringing health services closer to remote communities, reaching hard-to-access areas and helping thousands of families receive basic care. Recently, thanks to a project funded by UHC-P and in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MINSAL), the Basic Course for Health Promoters was updated. This new training is aimed at the more than 3000 promoters across the country, who serve more than 730 000 families. The objective of the course is to strengthen primary healthcare through an integrated, community-level approach that centers on the individual, the family, and the community. The first phase of the project took place in the departments of Morazán and La Unión, where 373 promoters received training to improve their skills and continue providing quality care to more than 55 000 families.
