CDC supports the Health Connection project in Maré, a large informal urban community (also known as a ‘favela’ or ‘slum’) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The project was established in 2020 to ensure that community members got the information, guidance, and resources they needed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Alongside other partners, CDC contributed funding and was later asked to help study the long-term consequences of COVID-19 and vaccine uptake. The Health Connection project remained resilient and continues to serve as a model for how public health partners can work together, engage with communities, and better address people’s needs in similar communities. Julia Paredes Lopez, a nurse with the Chihuahua Health Secretariat, has spent 30 years bringing vaccines to remote communities in Mexico. Her experience seeing children die of measles, a disease that is preventable through vaccination, inspired her to travel long distances on horseback or by foot to protect all people from vaccine-preventable diseases.  “In the last 30 years, I've seen how the vaccines  arrived to the most remote localities. I've seen how people have been convinced to get vaccinated. I've seen how people stopped dying because of measles,” she says. Measles is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus. It can be prevented with two doses of measles vaccine. Immunization for all is Humanly Possible. Josephine Kalombola, a mentor mother with Mothers2Mothers in Malawi, spends her days addressing young people’s concerns and misconceptions about human papillomavirus (HPV) in the country. Since Malawi has one of the highest cervical cancer mortality rates, Josephine encourages all girls aged 9-14 years to receive their HPV vaccination to protect against the high-risk HPV types that cause cervical cancer. “We need to serve our girls now to prevent them from cervical cancer,” she says. “No woman should die of cervical cancer. Key actions to address AMR include: preventing infections; using the right medicines the right way; developing new antibiotics; and reducing the unnecessary use of antimicrobials in health care, agriculture and food production.
