World Health Organization Video: Measles: Nurse Julia brings vaccines to remote communities in Mexico for 30 years
Julia Paredes Lopez, a nurse with the Chihuahua Health Secretariat, has spent 30 years bringing vaccines to remote communities in Mexico. Her experience seeing children die of measles, a disease that is preventable through vaccination, inspired her to travel long distances on horseback or by foot to protect all people from vaccine-preventable diseases.
“In the last 30 years, I've seen how the vaccines arrived to the most remote localities. I've seen how people have been convinced to get vaccinated. I've seen how people stopped dying because of measles,” she says.
Measles is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus. It can be prevented with two doses of measles vaccine. Immunization for all is Humanly Possible.

After many treatment efforts, her mother found pediatric gastroenterologist Maria Oliva-Hemker at the Children’s Center. From there, she was able to find better options for Kim. After a colectomy procedure, Kim no longer had to take medications and was able to begin her next stage of life.
