Porsches Taycan is projected to have the most
Electric vehicles (EV) have been in for aa rough ride lately. There was that footage from Chicagoin January, showingEVs running out of power as they waited in frigid temperatures at a charging station.
Then there are the sales numbers. These vehicles arent exactly flying off the lot.
Now, theres a new study showing that EVs are projected to have more recalls, for a variety of issues, than any other type of vehicle.
The study by automotive website iSeeCars.com found Porsches Taycan electric car is projected to be the most recalled vehicle while Teslas entire model line occupies four of the seven slots for most projected recalls. Lucid is in position number five.
While not all vehicles projected to have the most recalls are EVs, six of the top seven are. MINI, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and Audi are among the least recalled cars.
In 2023 the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued more than 300 vehicle recalls that involved more than 35 million cars, but not all for serious safety issues.
Recall hassles
Besides the safety issue, owners of recalled vehicles have to take time to address the problem.
If youre hoping to avoid recall hassles, you can significantly improve your odds by choosing the right model, said Karl Brauer, iSeeCars executive analyst.
A vehicle like the MINI Convertible or Lexus RX 450h has, literally, a fractional chance of being recalled even once, versus more than 60 projected recalls for the Porsche Taycan, Tesla Model Y, and Tesla Model 3.
All of the cars on the list are projected to have at least 15 or more recalls over its lifespan. That compares to the industry median of 3.2 recalls.
Recalls remedies that can be performed with an over-the-air (OTA) software upgrade take a lot of the hassle out of recalls. When OTA recalls are excluded, Tesla drops out of top 25 most projected recalled list.
