Millions of Americans use it for hours each day, nearly as many generate income from it. Now, TikTok, the Chinese social media company, is taking steps to block a potential ban of the platform in the U.S.
TikTok has filed suit in federal court, claiming the U.S. government is violating the First Amendment to the Constitution.
The suit is in response to the Congressional passage of a bill requiring parent company ByteDance to sell TikTok to a U.S. corporation within nine months or stop operating in the U.S. President Biden signed the measure last month.
“Congress has taken the unprecedented step of expressly singling out and banning TikTok: a vibrant online forum for protected speech and expression used by 170 million Americans to create, share, and view videos over the internet,” the complaint states.
“For the first time in history, Congress has enacted a law that subjects a single, named speech platform to a permanent, nationwide ban, and bars every American from participating in a unique online community with more than 1 billion people worldwide.”
Lawmakers said they are forcing the sale of TikTok because they believe it is a threat to national security, a charge the company denies.
