Know someone who needs – but resists – getting hearing aids? Here’s something you can use to convince them: A new study suggests that wearing hearing aids on a regular basis can extend a person’s lifespan.
If the study – led by researcher Dr. Janet Choi at the University of Southern California – is correct, it’s a game changer. Not to mention even further proof of the connection between hearing loss and diet, alcohol, and brain function.
“We found that adults with hearing loss who regularly used hearing aids had a 24% lower risk of mortality than those who never wore them,” Choi said.
“These results are exciting because they suggest that hearing aids may play a protective role in people’s health and prevent early death.”

Now, all that has to be done is to convince the tens of millions of Americans who have hearing loss, but wouldn’t buy a pair of hearing aids – yes, even if their life depended on it.
Barbara Kelley, Hearing Loss Association of America’s (HLAA) Executive Director told ConsumerAffairs, “It’s exciting to see this new research that hearing aids could prolong your life. It gives us more evidence that addressing hearing loss is important to overall health and wellbeing -- a message that HLAA works hard to promote.”
Choi agreed. "I encourage anyone experiencing hearing difficulties to get their hearing tested and determine the type and severity of their hearing loss," Choi told ConsumerAffairs.
Better advancements? Better value?
It is now easier and more affordable to buy hearing aids thanks to a 2022 ruling from the FDA that allows over-the-counter purchases of hearing aids – an option that works for some, but not everyone.
"You might be surprised at the variety of hearing device options available to assist with your hearing loss that can enhance daily communication and quality of life," Choi said.
"It may take time to find the hearing aids that fit you and get used to it. Once you do, you'll be amazed to hear the sounds that you have been missing."
