This week's top stories of the week include: 0:15 Wooden satellite may cut space junk – LignoSat, a revolutionary satellite made from magnolia wood, has been launched into space. This tiny cube, weighing just 900 grams, was developed by scientists at Kyoto University and has been transported to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard a SpaceX rocket. From the ISS, it will orbit Earth for six months, testing the durability of wood in the harsh environment of space. 2:07 Generative AI trends at work – As generative AI becomes more prevalent in the workplace users are finding some major trends in the results. The World Economic Forum and PwC surveyed more than 20 workplaces to find their biggest lessons from introducing GenAI. 4:25 World’s first hydrogen ferry – It carries up to 75 passengers from the city’s North Beach to downtown. The MV Sea Change ferry launched in July and for the first 6 months, it’s completely free. The Sea Change is powered by zero-emission hydrogen fuel cells. They generate electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen. The only by-product is water vapour some of which is remineralized and used in the ferry’s water fountain. 6:29 Global South’s energy revolution – 1 in 5 emerging markets now have a larger share of renewables in their energy mix than the average developed country. Although developing economies are home to two-thirds of the world’s population they contain just 20% of the world’s fossil fuel production and reserves. Meanwhile, these economies hold 70% of the planet’s renewable energy potential. _____________________________________________ The World Economic Forum is the International Organization for Public-Private Cooperation. This week's top stories of the week include: 0:14 Wind turbine repurposed into home – It’s built from the control box of a Vattenfall turbine which stood in an Austrian wind farm for 20 years. Most wind farm nacelles today are much larger. But a team from architecture collective Superuse Studios, working with Blade-Made, chose one of the smallest to prove that the concept of a tiny turbine home could work. 1:57 Robot makes its conducting debut – The 3-armed robot performed in a concert in Germany, leading the specially written Semiconductor’s Masterpiece. The piece features 3 wildly diverging time signatures. The orchestra’s artistic director says the robot is not intended to replace humans but to perform complex music too difficult for a person to conduct. 3:41 Europe’s largest Marine Protected Area – It covers almost 300,000 km2 of the ocean floor and encompasses several vulnerable marine ecosystems. Half the new MPA is fully protected, meaning no fishing or extractive activities are allowed. While the other half is highly protected which restricts activities like fishing. 6:41 4 ways to maximize cybersecurity – Cyber insecurity is one of the biggest risks facing the world. As technology evolves and spreads, cyber resilience becomes more important than ever. Cyber resilience is an organization’s ability to minimize the impact of significant cyber incidents on its primary goals and objectives. _____________________________________________ The World Economic Forum is the International Organization for Public-Private Cooperation.
